Somerville Design Profile: Altitude, Inc.

Altitude, Inc is a product innovation firm whose business is helping their clients to move into the 21st century with creativity and market savvy. What we love about Altitude is that it’s the definition of an interdisciplinary, future-thinking business, working with clients on everything from management to brand identity and product development, using a distinctly design-thinking approach to help businesses grow and prosper.  From their Davis Square space, they’ve designed brand identity strategies for large, corporate-client computer server systems as well as children’s play tables and toys. Their clients run the gamut from Mr. Coffee to Bayer, from consumer products to medical devices.

But it’s not just its work that makes Altitude, Inc. a business committed to innovation. Their active philanthropy program reflects a thoughtfulness and a future orientation that embodies Altitude’s approach. They support an organization “at the intersection of education and entrepreneurship” called Sweat Equity Education, which “give[s] students real-world projects that inspire them, igniting their passion for learning and creativity. Students get “a peek under the hood” of how global brands research, develop, produce, and bring to market new products and designs.” By being involved in Sweat Equity, Altitude shows that it’s not just interested in the future of their clients – they care about the future of design innovation and creativity in their community and the economy. Not surprisingly, design thinking and innovation influences Altitude’s approach to sustainability, as they test and track consumption patterns to make the Altitude office more efficient.

This is what we think makes Altitude, Inc. a great example of a inspiring Somerville company. This is no basement-tinkering, don’t-quit-your-day-job design firm. Altitude’s clients are some of the biggest corporations in the country, and their products are changing the way we eat, care for the sick, and enjoy our everyday lives. But there’s a community-mindedness about their work that is authentically Somerville. Their creativity and flexibility embodies why design firms are becoming increasingly important for all fields as they home to grow and innovate. We look forward to watching them continue to shake things up in the future!

Design Annex Launches New Initiative to Grow Local Design Industry

In July, Union Square Main Streets’s Design Annex hosted its first biz.buzz, a quarterly networking event for small and medium sized creative businesses and their professionals. At biz.buzz, these folks exchange favors, advice, and opportunities instead of just business cards, in a new kind of networking to build the individual businesses and to strengthen the design industry in Somerville overall.

The next biz.buzz will be held October 13.  Stay tuned for details.

Alongside networking and community building of events like biz.buzz, Design Annex is also launching a series of profiles of these professionals so that even more people can get to know the incredible wealth of talent in Somerville. If you or someone you know is interested in being profiled, please let us know! You can get in touch with us at info@dannex.org, or send us a tweet to @designannex.
